How does my profile link work, and who can see it?
Every member has a profile link: 8nout.com/p/ followed by a code of 8 letters and numbers. You'll find it on your Profile tab, under Your profile link, with buttons to copy it, share it and preview your public page.
Anyone who has your link can open your public profile, with or without an 8nOut account. It only reaches people you share it with, or people they pass it on to. We never show your code to other members, and search engines are always told not to list the code link.
The code link is always there. You can't switch it off, and you can't change or reset it yourself. If your link has reached someone it shouldn't, email privacy@8nout.com and we'll issue you a new one. The old link stops working straight away.
Someone who opens your link without signing in sees your display name (this may be your real first and last name), your photo, your town and country, your bio, whether you're Ready to play, your win–loss record, your self-reported Fargo Rating, your CueScore link and your clubs. They never see your contact details, your home table, your connections, or whether you're online.
If you're under 18, or haven't told us your age group, your link opens only for signed-in 8nOut members. Anyone who isn't signed in gets the same "Profile not found" page they'd get for a link that doesn't exist, so it doesn't give away that your profile is there.
If you're 18 or over, you can also claim a profile name, so your link reads like 8nout.com/p/your-name. Tap Claim a name under Your profile link. Before you claim, the app shows exactly what becomes public and asks you to accept the Public Profile Name Terms. A name is 3 to 20 characters: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Some names are reserved, and names with language that isn't allowed on 8nOut are refused, with the reason shown. Your code link keeps working after you claim a name.
Claiming a name makes your profile findable. Anyone who types the address can open it, and search engines such as Google can list it straight away. The switch for this is called Let search engines find my profile. You'll see it as soon as you've claimed, and it stays under Your profile link. Turn it off and we ask search engines to stop listing you, and take your address out of our sitemap. Listings they already have can take days to weeks to drop, so it isn't instant. To speed it up, you can ask Google to refresh a listing with its Remove outdated content tool. With the switch off, anyone who types your name can still open the page.
You can change your name once every 30 days. The old name stops working straight away and doesn't forward to the new one. It's held for 6 months, so nobody can claim it in that time, including you. Changing your name leaves the search-engine switch as it was.
You can remove your name at any time with Remove my profile name. The address stops working straight away and we stop asking search engines to list it. The name is held for 6 months, and your code link keeps working. Removing a name doesn't reset the 30 days: you can claim a new one once 30 days have passed since your last claim or change.
On Android there's no place yet to confirm your age after you've signed up. If you told us you're 18 or over when you signed up, or you've confirmed it in the iPhone or web app, you can claim a name on Android the same way. If you haven't, your profile link on Android tells you it only opens for signed-in members, and you can't claim a name from Android for now.
If someone's profile name is offensive or pretends to be someone else, open their profile in the app, choose Report player and pick Profile link name. On the public page itself, anyone can use Report this page, which opens an email to us. A person reviews every report. If we remove a name, its owner is told which rule it broke and why, and the name can't be claimed again.
Profile links shared before these links existed looked like 8nout.com/p/?id= followed by a long code. They no longer open a profile. They show "This link has changed" instead, so ask the player for their current link.
