Does 8nOut use cookies or analytics?

On our public website pages, such as the home page, Help and the blog, a banner called Cookies for website statistics asks whether we may use Google Analytics. It counts visits and shows which pages are used, so we can improve the website. Statistics stay off unless you choose Accept. If you choose Reject, or don't choose at all, nothing is set. Choose shows you the details and lets you decide for yourself.

If you accept, Google Analytics records the pages you view (the address only, without anything after ? or #), the page title, the page you came from, scrolling, clicks on links to other websites, file downloads, your approximate location (city, region and country; Google works this out from your IP address and doesn't store the IP address), device type, browser, operating system, screen size and language. It places two cookies on 8nout.com, _ga and one whose name starts with _ga_, holding a random ID for up to 12 months.

The data goes to 1 third party: Google, acting as our processor. Google may not use it for its own purposes or for ads, keeps it for 14 months, and may process it in the United States under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework. We never use it for ads, and it is never linked to your 8nOut account, even when you are signed in.

Statistics only run on public website pages. They never run inside the 8nOut web app, the admin pages, public profiles, or invite and share links, and the iPhone and Android apps run no analytics at all. Some links in the apps open a website page in your browser, for example Help in the Android app. Those are website pages, so the banner and your choice for the website apply there.

You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings button. On the home page it sits in the footer, at the bottom of the page. On the other pages where the banner appears, it floats at the bottom of the screen whenever the banner isn't showing. It opens the same settings as Choose: switch Statistics on or off and select Save choice, or use Accept all or Reject all.

If you switch statistics off, the Google Analytics cookies are deleted straight away and nothing more is sent to Google, on that page or any later one. You don't need to reload the page. Data that was already sent stays with Google until its 14 months are up.

Your choice is saved in this browser only, for 12 months. After that we ask again, or sooner if the statistics themselves change. In another browser or on another device, you'll see the banner once more.

If your browser blocks website storage, as some private modes and privacy settings do, we can't remember your choice. Statistics then stay off, and the banner comes back on every page you open.

The Privacy Policy, linked below, has the full details.
