How do I centre the map on my own location?
Look for a small crosshair button, bottom-left on the Map tab. On iPhone and the website it sits just below the "You" chip if you're sharing presence. Tap it and the map centres on wherever you are right now, at whatever accuracy your phone or browser's own location setting allows. It's a one-off camera move. No pin or dot is left behind, and you're free to pan or zoom away afterwards, just like anywhere else on the map.
It only ever moves the map when you tap it. On iPhone, Android and the website, 8nOut never centres the map on your live location by itself: not when you open the app, and not in the background. On iPhone and the website it's also separate from two other things you may see on the Map tab: the cinematic zoom when the tab first opens, which frames your home table or your home city rather than your live position, and the "You're near [Club]" banner, which only checks against clubs already in our own directory. A tap on the crosshair button always takes over from either of those, never the other way round.
The first time you tap it, 8nOut may ask for permission to use your location. It's the same prompt your phone or browser shows anywhere else on 8nOut that reads your position. Say yes and the map centres straight away. If you've already allowed it from somewhere else in 8nOut, there's no prompt at all. On Android, if you said no the first time, your next tap may first show a short note from 8nOut explaining why it asks, before Android asks you again.
Your position is read fresh from your device each time you tap, used only to move the map, then discarded. It's never resolved to a city, never sent to 8nOut's servers or to any third party, and never logged or stored anywhere, on any platform. That's the same on-device-only handling described in our Privacy Policy.
If you've said no to location before, tapping the button shows a small message instead of moving the map. On iPhone it takes you straight to Settings. On Android, whenever location is refused, a "Location is off" card appears with an "Open Settings" button, which opens 8nOut's own page in your phone's settings, and a "Not now" button to close it. On the website, since browsers don't offer that shortcut, it tells you where to look in your own browser's settings. Turn location on for 8nOut there, then tap the button again. On Android, if nothing happens at all and no card appears, check that location is switched on for your phone.
