What if the name I choose isn't allowed, and can I change it later?

The name you play under is set on the first setup question. It's the name on your row in a club's list, and the name other players search by.

8nOut checks what you type against the same fixed list that keeps chat clean. Type something that doesn't pass, and it's quietly not adopted — your profile keeps its default "New Player" name instead, with no error message. That's deliberate: this particular screen doesn't show errors.

Because nothing tells you this happened, the sign to look for is your own profile still showing "New Player" after you've been through setup. 8nOut treats that as an unanswered question, so Finish setting up — the card or link on your Profile — takes you straight back to the same name question. Type a different name there and it's adopted normally, the same as it would be the first time.

Once a real name of yours has been accepted, you can change it from Profile — the Name card's Edit button opens the same first and last name fields as setup, alongside your country, town, club, and the rest of your profile. Saving now writes through to your public display name too: the name on a club's list, in chat, on the map, and with connections and challenges, not just your internal profile details. It runs through the same fixed list as setup, but here a name that doesn't pass shows an error and isn't saved, rather than being quietly dropped.

If your profile still shows "New Player" and you're not sure why an ordinary name didn't take, email us — see How do I send feedback? for the address and what to expect.

One more case, unrelated to typing: if you link a CueScore profile whose name doesn't meet the same check, 8nOut keeps the name you already have rather than switching to the CueScore one. The link itself still goes through fine.
